WARRENBY GUNDOGS BREED INFORMATION

German Shorthaired Pointer

German Shorthaired Pointers were first developed in the 19th century and are one of the most popular HPR breeds ( Hunt, Point and Retrieve ).

GSPs are short coated, medium sized dogs of an alert and intelligent disposition. Their ability in the shooting field to perform the all-embracing role of game finding, pointing and retrieving dog has brought recognition of their suitability as a companion to the average rough shooting man in the UK.

The GSP has a very highly developed air scenting ability and is a most admirable game-finder. It is a staunch pointer and readily holds birds for the gun. It is required to be steady in the field and to be a tender-mouthed retriever from both land and water. The GSP is a tireless worker, ranging open ground and working cover with equal enthusiasm.

The German Shorthaired Pointer has a loyal and level-headed nature which makes it endearing to all the family. It's protectiveness without aggression makes it a good housedog BUT it is not happy as a lap dog or flat dweller. Adaptable as the GSP is, it should be remembered that it is essentially a working gundog with a very active physique together with a high trainability which denotes an active mind. The breed loves children and people, repaying its owners for the time and attention required of them with most affectionate loyalty.

Dogs from several excellent working lines are available in the UK today such as Sanjon and Hege Haus so purchasers should choose carefully after researching the right line for their intended use. This breed is commonly docked for working purposes.

Early training is essential as they develop into powerful dogs. Fully grown, dogs 23 to 25 inches at the shoulder, bitches 21 to 23.
