WARRENBY GUNDOGS BREED INFORMATION

German Wirehaired Pointers were first developed in the 19th century and are one of the most formidable HPR breeds ( Hunt, Point and Retrieve ).

They are a substantial dog with a tough wiry coat and when properly trained are biddable and very loyal. They do have a reputation for requiring constant training. They are not just GSPs with a wiry coat, they are a completely different breed. They have a strong guarding instinct and can be fiercely protective of their home and family. They can also be quite wilfull and are extremely intelligent and energetic. They were designed to hunt and if necessary kill large game in the forests of Germany and can cover huge distances all day long so should not be allowed to run free unless under control.

They do not make ideal family pets in urban environments and a walk on a lead in a municipal park does not provide the exercise or stimulation these dogs require. 

There are several excellent working lines in the UK today such as Mustwork so purchasers should choose carefully after researching the right line for their intended use. This breed is commonly docked for working purposes. They are heavy feeders during the hunting season.

Early training is essential as they develop into very powerful dogs. Fully grown, dogs 24 to 26 inches at the withers, bitches smaller but not under 22 inches at the withers.

Colours:- Dark Brown; English Liver; German Liver; Chocolate; Chestnut; Black; Roan or Ticked on a white base. Solid colours are Black; Liver; Solid Dark Chocolate.
