WARRENBY GUNDOGS BREED INFORMATION
Korthals Griffons are regarded by some as an HPR ( Hunt, Point and Retrieve ) Gundog 'par excellence' and early development began around 1873. They are a very young breed in terms of recognition in the UK, only gaining the ability to enter KC Gundog events in 2008. They are a solidly built dog with a tough wiry coat, not dissimilar in appearance to the GWP and when properly trained are biddable and very loyal. The KG loves people, is loyal and affectionate, but will guard ‘his’ property loudly, and can be feisty in defence.
They are dogs for the countryside, free running hunting dogs and need exercise and control and the exercise is required mostly off the lead. They require mental stimulation to make the most of their intellect and revel in all forms of training with their handlers towards disciplines such as Working Tests, Field Trials etc.
This breed is rare in the UK and pups are hard to come by. Indeed, the Korthals Griffon Club in the UK has an entire section devoted to importing KG's from Europe as there are so few here. This breed is commonly docked for working purposes. The KG’s ability to be easily trained is recognised, but remember, at all times the KG is a tough dog with a gentle heart and should be trained gently and with affection. He needs consistent, firm but fair training.
Fully grown, dogs 21 and 3/4 to 23 and a 1/2 inches at the withers, bitches 19 and 3/4 to 21 and 3/4 inches.
